Name: Mascota Vineyards La Mascota Malbec 2013
Variety: Malbec
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2013
Price: $14.99

Winery Review: La Mascota Malbec shows an intense purple color with ruby hues and displays aromas of black fruits, jam and vanilla, A very subtle licorice touch and full-bodied tannins lead to a long and pleasant finish.

My review: This is a intense dark purple wine . The smell is fruity and somewhat sweet. The taste at first is sweet and jammy, fruity, then dry, acidic, tangy aftertaste. It had some tobacco and licorice flavor, but i really enjoyed the texture of this wine it was smooth and comfortable to drink. I surprisingly enjoyed this wine, and I do not like Malbec. This wine was very enjoyable, the sweet impression and tangy aftertaste got me by surprise but i enjoyed it so much that I bought myself a bottle. Well paired with a nice heavy juicy steak in form of Asado or a  seasoned baked pork ribs.
Name: Dom du Mistral Plan de Dieu
Variety: Grenache with Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, and Cinsault the signature Rhone
Region: Cotes du Rhone, Rhone
Country: France
Year: 2014
Price: $12.99

Winery Review: Dark and brilliant purple, with subtle notes of red cherries and spices. It has generous volume of red fruits and a full body finish. Pairs well with duck, lamb, stew, or stuffed eggplant.

My review: This is very dark purple and a slight bit of red, the mourvedre gives it the color. I do not smell much of the aromas in this wine. It is a little oaky but not intense. The taste is dirty, tangy, dry, acidic, spicy, and fruity. French wines tend to be a little dirty.

Name: A3 Cabernet Sauvignon
Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: California
Country: United States
Year: 2013
Price: $7.99

Winery Review: Perfect anytime, anyplace with anyone. This elegant, medium-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon is filled with rich cherry flavors and toasty vanilla touches of goodness. Pairs perfectly with chicken dishes, red meats and mildly seasoned pastas. At $8 a bottle, this is a respectable medium body Cabernet Sauvignon- Breezy57

My review: It is a ruby red with purple colored wine. This is easy, table wine. Smell of cherries. The taste has an aftertaste of vanilla and somewhat sweet. This is smooth and drinkable not all dry. It is drinkable, not complex, easy simple Cabernet, greatly paired with chicken and seasoned pastas.

Name: Corvallis Cellars Pinot Noir
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Willamette Valley, Oregon
Country:  United States
Year: 2013
Price: $16.99

Winery Review: This silky fruit-forward, medium-bodied wine features aromas of raspberries and florals followed by flavors of black cherry and spice. This wine is rich, layered and oaky. Complements a wide variety of food. This is outstanding wine value. Better than wines costing 2x more. This knocks the socks off of almost all of the California Pinot Noirs.--Avid Explorer

My review: This is a nice ruby red wine. The smell is acidic, plum, dark cherries, oaky and pomegranate. It is unique for Pinot, the acidity is from the pomegranate. The taste is leathery, raspberry, tangy, acidic, dry, spicy and a smoky finish of oak. This is a well paired with chicken, salmon, indian cuisine, goat meat curry, and tika chicken.
Name:  Anne de K Riesling 2012
Variety: Riesling
Region: Alsace
Country: France
Year: 2012
Price:  $14.99

Winery Review: With its firm structure and strongly steely tendencies, this wine will repay aging. Orange citrus is woven into the texture of the wine, showing acidity and a taut, tangy aftertaste. It will need time to come together...

My review: This is 100 % Riesling. The color of the is little yellowish. The bouquet is refreshing with oak, citrus, and peach. The taste is acidic, citrus, tangy, crispy, and semi oaky. This wine is well paired with salmon, tuna, spicy food, or salads. Food paired with this wine would be light and easy, seafood, salad, ham, lighter meat, or a light alfredo

17-18 Acres and expanding                     I at Main Entrance

I visited this winery due to a friend who always goes to the Lake Anna State Park over the summer. This place is less than 10 minutes away from the park. The environment around the winery is friendly and welcoming. We arrived early in the winery. We were welcomed and toured by Eric Heidig. We got to meet his second brother Jeff Heidig, who was a Hokie, on our way out. These two brothers actually own the vineyard and this is a family owned winery. First owned and established by their father, Bill Heidig, after a trip in France. During the trip he noticed that the climate of France was similar to Spotsylvania, VA and started the business with his wife Ann in 1880’s. First wines produced were made from the first harvested grapes, Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc.

Oak Barrel used to ferment wine

Ripening time of grapes is around early August. They hire a wine chemists from France to check on the grapes for its sugar content. Once the sugar level, pH, and acidity are its correct stage then they call the pickers to harvest the grapes.

Eric treats all of his grapes equally, there is no specific wine he is proud of. Every grapes to him are of great importance. The two brothers Eric and Jeff took over the barn sixteen years ago and they added tanks, tasting room, wine-making room, and climate control room for wine production. Jeff said “We don’t believe in having more than 1 warehouse, because we believe in producing and distributing instead of housing them.”

Stainless Steel tanks to ferment wine

They use French made barrels made of US woods, white oak medium toast. French Coopers made the barrels they have been using. When Bill started making wine he had only one stainless steel tank now they have 5-6 more tanks. One of the future goal they have is to plant more grapes on the 17-18 acres of land just need the time and people to do so.

Their bottling machine bottles up to 1600 bottles an hour. After bottled, it is placed in climate control that is about 60°F. They distribute to every state, all year around. They do more distribution during the fall. The winery makes New World wines.

Essensual 2014 :- $20.00
A sweet, floral, vicious treat, made in the non-traditional ice wine style, combining the essence of grape Vidal Blanc, with a sensual mouth feel.

I will go back again to visit the winery during summer. I learned a lot and found out there are internship opportunities they are working on. But one thing for sure, Jeff doesn’t mind getting extra help when it comes down to harvesting. So I will be back in the summer to get to learn more experience and learn more about the wine processing from a hands on experience.

Name: Domaine des Miles Chablis 2013
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: France
Country:  Burgundy
Year: 2013
Price: $15.99

Winery Review:From Burgundy, France made from 100% Chardonnay. Fresh and lively nose, clean on the palate with flavor that lingers throughout the finish. Pair with Shrimp Scampi.

My review: As you get your nose near the wine glass, you will instantly realize it's a chardonnay without looking at its label. It is a white wine. The bouquet of this wine  were very citrus but more lime flavor. It also gave more of a milky cheese like smell, maybe because it was steel barreled. It was high in acidity and alcoholic. The aftertaste of alcohol makes you mouth dry but your mouth will be watery in an instant. Great when paired with poultry, fish, and cream soups like clam chowder.
